In the words of Principal Margaret Campbell, ‘The Lawrence A. BurkeS.J. Centre is more than just a new facility. It represents the love and commitment of many members of the school community, who have contributed towards its construction, including Archbishop Burke and his family, and old boy Carl Chang, who worked so hard on its construction, but passed away on October 11, 2011, before its completion.’
The Most Rev. Edgerton R. Clarke, Archbishop Emeritus of Kingston officially opened the ceremony with a prayer.
The Most Rev. Charles Dufour, Archbishop Kingston blessed the building before a large crowd of invited guests.
Mr. Milton Millwood, representative of the class of 1961, presented a plaque to Mrs. Margaret Campbell, Principal. This Class had donated JMD $1 million to the building fund.
Messages were given by Mr. Wayne Wray of the St. George’s College Old Boys Association Jamaica Chapter and Mr. Robert Vernon of the Old Boys’ Association, Ontario Chapter.
Mrs. Campbell made presentations of plaques of appreciation to Mr. G. Raymond Chang, Mr. Tony Wong and contractor, Mr. Ray Wynter, for their dedication to the completion of the building.
Mr. Tony Wong, President of the St. George’s College Sports Council, gave the vote of thanks.
The late Carl Chang, our own Jamaica Liaison Director, pioneered the project, and on his passing, G. Raymond Chang, Tony Wong, Joe and Robin Mahfood were mainly responsible for funding and management.
Thanks go out to the countless numbers of old boys who gave Carl Chang and St. George’s College their moral and financial support.
