Manning Cup [semi-final]
St. George’s College was beaten by Mona High in the semi-final of the Manning Cup. Mona started strongly and went ahead after our defense failed to clear a high ball deep into our defense. Mona’s Matthew Spence scored from close range.
The Knights responded quickly when mid-fielder Zabir Taylor scored from a clever lob that hit the underside of the crossbar, the goalkeeper and then into the goal.
In the second half, the Knights played below par as repetitive turnovers from poor passing, over dribbling and careless fouls in dangerous positions, plagued us. Mona would get a free kick just outside the penalty area. They would score with from a powerfully struck shot by their star attacker, Denzil McKenzie which beat our goalie.
In the quarter finals of the Champions Cup against Clarendon College, the Knights played very well. We totally dominated the second half with the score at 1-1. With relentless pressure, including six straight corners, we failed to score. In the eight forth minute, Clarendon College would break in a counter attack and scored. We would eventually lose the game 1-3. It was one of the best games in the 2023 schoolboy football season.
All in all, we had a credible season. We needed a little more punch up front and defensively, we were much improved but needed to be tighter in crucial games.
Thanks to all the members of the Manning Cup team, the coaches, support staff and the contributors to the program. The season requires an enormous effort from players and staff.
So, we will re-tool and come again.
Well done Manning Cup Knights!!
