Pluto Shervinton Passes On
Jamaican Treasure, Pluto Shervinton Passes On.
Leighton Keith “Pluto” Shervington, reggae musician, song writer and record producer passed on last week in Florida.
He graduated from St. George’s College in 1966 and was known to be capable guitarist and musically oriented while in school.
After high school, he attended the College of Arts, Science and Technology where he studied Accounts and Finance.
Shortly after leaving school, he became a member of the ‘Tomorrow’s Children’ band and began to work and perfect particularly, his song writing skills. By the middle of the 1970’s, he had created a niche in the evolving reggae genre. His songs were cleverly written, with a tinge of humour and sung in patios. Some of his more popular songs were ‘Your Honour’, ‘Ram Goat Live’ and ‘Dat’.
He was not without controversy as in 1976, he released ‘I Man Born Ya’ which reflected the volatile political situation at the time and the resulting flight of Jamaicans to foreign lands. He would himself leave Jamaica permanently for Florida a year later.
He was immensely popular as a vintage performer and was a regular guest at the STGC OBA Florida and STGC OBA Ontario chapters Summer Galas.
Plato leaves behind wife, Dinora and six grown children. We pray for his family at this difficult time.
