St. George’s College Receives J$50 Million for New Gymnasium from Alumnus Phillip Wong

Kingston, Jamaica – September 23, 2025 – St. George’s College, a prestigious Jesuit high school in Kingston, has been gifted J$50 million by its distinguished alumnus, Phillip Wong, to construct and equip a state-of-the-art gymnasium and support tutoring programs. The announcement was made during the second installment of a three-part lecture series at the school today, attended by students and educators from 10 high schools across Jamaica
Wong, the founder and CEO of Deltana Enterprises, one of the largest architectural hardware distributors in the United States, graduated from St. George’s College in 1959. The donation includes J$40 million for the 40,000-square-foot Barbara and Philip Wong STGC Gymnasium at Emmet Park, which will feature full air-conditioning, modern locker rooms, and top-tier equipment. The remaining J$10 million will fund after-school tutoring programs to strengthen students’ academic development.
During his address on perseverance, Wong, who holds degrees in electrical engineering and an MBA, shared his inspiring journey from Tahiti to Jamaica and eventual success in the U.S., where he founded Deltana in 1977. He urged students to “push through setbacks” and give back to their communities. “This gift is about building bodies and minds,” Wong said, reflecting his commitment to holistic education.
The gymnasium, named after Wong and his wife, Barbara, marks another milestone in his ongoing philanthropy to his alma mater, which includes scholarships and prior donations like two buses in 2022 and US$1 million earlier in 2025. The project is expected to enhance the school’s facilities, benefiting current and future generations of students.
